2011 Annual Summit of Green Companies

21-22 April
Qingdao, China

Simon spoke at a panel discussion focusing on ICT’s contribution to facilitating China’s transition to a low carbon economy, at the 2011 Summit of Green Companies. The panel session – New ICT Trend: Facilitating the Green Transformation of China’s Economy – discussed how the ICT industry can raise carbon performance and provide a “smart core” for the traditional industries (such as construction, logistics, manufacturing, and services); and how the new generation of internet technologies such as “Cloud computing” can reconstruct a new business ecosystem in this era of information and technology.

Simon is leading a team examining the contribution of ICT in supporting China in meeting its energy and carbon intensity targets. A background paper – ICT and Low Carbon Growth in China was launched at the 2010 Summit on ICT and China’s low carbon economy development. Developed for the Digital Energy Solutions Campaign (DESC) China by Simon Zadek, Maya Forstater, Kelly Yu and Jon Kornik, the paper presents a quantitative analysis of the impacts of ICT on low carbon growth in China, and includes insights with key Chinese and international policy and industrial research groups on the possible policy measures and initiatives that could secure the contribution of ICT to reducing China’s carbon footprint whilst promoting scientific development.

This year’s summit falls under the theme of “Responsibility and Innovation in a Shifting World – Our Solution”. The summit promotes exchange and consensus between political decision-makers, entrepreneurs, scholars, representatives of NGOs and journalists from China and other countries. It provides leading enterprises with a platform to present ideas and set examples, and is committed to seeking solutions to promote the sustainable development of both economy and society.

The summit was established by the China Entrepreneur Club (CEC) on Earth Day, April 22, 2008. It is the first cross-sectoral, international conference for entrepreneurs in China that focuses on sustainable business development.

The 2011 Annual Summit of Green Companies will once again gather dignitaries from around the globe, each with a sense of mission and strategic views for the future. New trends in business values will be explored, with an emphasis on innovative solutions to promote business sustainability. As a highlight, the summit will announce “China’s Top 100 Green Companies” for the year 2011, encouraging structural transformation of Chinese enterprises towards a greener and innovation-driven economy.
